A male plant produces no flowers to smoke, so judging his value requires indirect methods. Lines regarded as the best regular seeds for breeding tend to produce males with sturdy stems, tight node spacing, strong aroma when the stalk is rubbed, and resistance to pests and mildew. Early-flowering males are often rejected, as that trait can be associated with lower potency or unwanted sensitivity. The only conclusive test is to pollinate a female and evaluate the resulting progeny.
